Are you a disciple?

Most people in Christian circles would define a disciple as…

Disciple – A follower of Jesus Christ.

Is that a biblical definition?

This is something I have thought a lot about this week as I have seen people that call themselves followers and fans of Clemson football absolutely attack the football team and its coach.

(By the way, Coach Bowden, some of us think that you are a great coach. Congratulations on your contract extension. I am glad that you are going to be with us for several more years. Thank you for the way you lead our tigers with dignity and respect. Good luck in Atlanta on New Year’s Eve!)

These people criticize every move the coach or team makes, but claim that Clemson is their team because they pull for them to win. But is that enough? Some of these “fans” know little about the game of football and many of them have never played football. Most of them have no relationship with any of the coaches or players and have no idea who they are as individuals off the field, and never stop and think that these players and coaches want to win games way more than the “fans” want them too. Most of them do nothing but show up and watch the game being played and claim that this makes Clemson their team.

Many people use the same mentality when it comes to saying they are a disciple of Jesus. What makes someone a disciple? What does being a disciple really mean?

LK 14:25-27 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters–yes, even his own life–he cannot be my disciple. 27 And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

Jesus obviously thought that being a disciple was about more than just claiming to be a fan of His. Based on this passages and many others, here is a definition of a disciple that I like.

Disciple – Someone who has concluded that life with Jesus is more precious than anything else in existence. This conclusion has led them to sever all ties with hopes, dreams ,desires, and comfort, that are not the will of God and has replaced them with the joy and suffering that comes from seeking to be with Christ and being obedient to God’s will..

In other words I believe that a disciple is defined by being a complete, competent, passionate Zealot for Jesus Christ.

We all need to ask ourselves a question. Am I a follower or a disciple?
