Is Masturbation sin or not?

Perry preached a bold and clear message this past Sunday on Sexual Sin. The care staff has had the privilege this week of talking to and trying to help several people that are dealing with the bondage that comes from being trapped in sexual sin. It is always so powerful to hear stories about how God has been setting people free from the slavery they are in.

Most Christians have no problem seeing that struggles with pornography, fornication, and adulturey are sinful.

However, when it comes to the subject of masturbation, there are some who say that it is ok. I have heard people use the argument that scripture never says specifically that masturbation is wrong. They are correct. Scripture doesn’t use the word masturbation but it also doesn’t use the words pornography or pedophilia. But I doubt that anyone is going to argue that these are not sexual sins.

Another argument I have heard recently from some is that masturbation is not wrong because James Dobson says that it is not. While I do greatly respect Dr. Dobson for his parenting and marital advice, obviously I disagree with him on this subject.

I saw a great and loving response to Dr. Dobson by Mike Cleveland, the Founder and President of Setting Captives Free. Mike does a great job showing respect and love to another believer even while disagreeing with him. There are many Christians that could learn from Mike’s example of how to speak the truth in love.

If you are struggling with an addiction to masturbation, and questioning whether it is a sin or not, then I encourage you to read Mike’s response that I linked above. You can also see Perry’s thoughts on this issue here.

If you are struggling with any sexual addiction, NewSpring would love to help you. Our care staff is available to talk with you and direct you to resources to help you be free. I will also recommend to you Mike’s website, Setting Captives Free. It has some great resources that have helped many people to see their sexual sin for what it is and help them to get the healing that they need.

God wants us to be free from bondage!

Galatians 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
