God’s Purposes for Marriage – Part 2

3) Companionship

Genesis 2:18 – The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.

This is the first place in scripture where God said something was not good. It is important to understand that God did not make a mistake here. Adam was created with an unmet need. In other words God chose to build a unique need into Adam that was not met by God’s presence alone. In other words, God had a gift He wanted to give Adam, but withheld it until the perfect time.

So what did God do next? He showed Adam his need.

Genesis 2:19-20 – Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.

That last sentence is my favorite in all of scripture. I am so glad that Adam did not settle. He could have settled for the Elephant. He could have said to God…“You know God, me and the Elephant are friends, I think we will hang out and become best friends.” Adam didn’t settle. And if you are unmarried and contemplating marriage let me ask you…Are you settling? Or are you waiting on God to provide?

I believe that what did happen in this scene is that God paraded all of the animals in front of Adam and I think as he was naming them,  that he noticed something. Adam saw a he Elephant, and a she elephant. A he kangaroo, and a she kangaroo. a he gorilla and a she gorilla…do you get my point. Adam realized that he was missing a she.

So what did God do next? God provided for Adam’s need.

Genesis 2:21, 22 – So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep and while he was sleeping he took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

Ladies, you have always wondered why men don’t understand you…The boy was asleep when you were made…and I think that most men are still recovering from that holy anesthesia.

God created her. The original language says he fashioned her. Ladies, please understand that God made you very special.

Then God presented her. I believe here that we have the first wedding ceremony in scripture. And Guys, you thought it was intimidating to have your father-in-law give your bride away.

And then Adam received her.

Genesis 2:23 – The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, for she was taken out of man.”

Adam received her because he trusted God. He trusted that Eve was God’s best for him. He didn’t know everything about her. He was asleep when she came on the scene.

Quick question…Who was Adam’s first relationship with? God.

Who was Eve’s first relationship with? God also.  The point in all of this is that they were able to receive each other as gifts from God, not because they had everything figured out, or had all of their questions answered, but because they knew God and trusted him to provide his best.  We must also know God before we can trust him to give us his best.

God created marriage for us to have companionship, for us to have a best friend to share life with.  If you are married, never take for granted the companionship, friendship, and love that you have in the spouse that God has provided for you.

We have one more purpose that God designed marriage for…it is the most important.
