What is Holiness?

What does it mean to be holy?  That is a word that we see often in scripture.  We sing songs to God praising Him for His holiness, but often times we don’t stop to think about what holiness is.  The word holy means to be without sin.  God is holy, He is perfect, He is sinless.

In Leviticus 11:45, God says, “I am the LORD who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy because I am holy.”

God is sinless and He is pure.  Because God is pure and holy, He wants us to live pure and holy lives also.

As believers in Jesus, how do we live our lives in a way that honors God?  What does it mean for us to pursue holiness?

The other day, Beth Marshall, the care ministry coordinator at NewSpring sent me a quote on holiness that challenged me and that answers this question well.  It is from a devotional book called “Daybreak,” by Gwen Carroll.

Gwen says, ” You need to understand something about holiness.  Holiness is not a bunch of ‘thou shall nots.’  Holiness is nothing more than being in the habit of being of one mind with God. That means you love what He loves and hate what He hates. That is what holiness is. It does not mean we will be a bunch of long-faced, dried up, half dead, worn out, pitiful-looking people. The glory of God is going to be seen upon us.”

Isaiah 60:1-2

“Arise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.

See, darkness covers the earth
and thick darkness is over the peoples,
but the LORD rises upon you
and his glory appears over you.

“We are going to learn to talk like He talks, act like He acts, walk like He walks, forgive like He forgives, and heal like He heals.”

God, make us holy like you are holy.
