Why should I get married?

This past Sunday we finished our singles series at NewSpring Chruch entitled “don’t get married until.”  If you are interested in watching the messages from this series you can view them here.

In light of that series, I have had many conversations with people that ask me this question: How do you know when you’ve found the right one?

Here are my thoughts on that question…You should only get married because you know (not think) that God has called you to marry this person. You should get married because you realize that you can never go as far, or accomplish as much alone for God as you can with this person. That is when you know that you’ve found the right one.

So what are some practical ways that you can know?

1) God’s Peace

If you have a lack of peace you should listen to that. When God gives you his peace about something in your future, you know it. You have it, there is a confidence that circumstances can not shake. When you don’t have it, there are not enough circumstances to make you feel confident enough. God’s peace is a gift and it comes from learning to hear His voice and obedience to His direction.

2) God’s Word

God’s Word is living and active and if you are wanting to hear God’s voice and receive His peace, then know that God speaks through His word. For any decision we are making in life it is wise to look to scripture for direction.

Psalm 119:105 – “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path”

3) God’s People

Proverbs 11:14 – “For lack of Guidance a nation falls, but many advisers make victory sure.”

Is anyone expressing Concerns about your relationship? Do they love Jesus? If you have friends, family, pastors that love you and love Jesus, you should seek out their advice and listen to the wisdom that God gives them. That is not to say that they are always right, but if you have people that are godly and have your best interest at heart, you should consider their advice. It might be that God has given them a thought that you should consider or that He has given them some encouragement to minister to you.

4) God’s Timing

Even the right person at the wrong time is still the wrong person for now. What is the rush for marriage? If one of you has doubts or needs time to gain God’s peace and direction for the relationship, that should be respected and encouraged. What’s the rush? Scripture says that love is patient. Marriage is not a decision that should be pressured. God’s timing is perfect and He uses His timing to confirm things to us.
